So you are a parent in 2021. Parenting is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced. Not only have you been competing with tik-tok, instagram, and Among Us for your child’s attention but you’ve also gone through a pandemic, zoom school, and you’ve had another meeting with the principal about their behavior.
Your emotions can lie to you. Sometimes you feel like you’re not good enough. Regularly, you feel like your teenage son doesn’t care about you. You battle comparing yourself to other “cool” parents. Stop. And be the parent that God designed YOU to be.
Enthusiastically love your child. Show them that you are intensely eager and interested in them. You’ve heard it before that love is spelled T-I-M-E. Someone once said that “a child may outgrow your lap, but they will never outgrow your heart.” Love your child even when they don’t seem to love you back.
Privately pray with them. Paul Tripp says, “Prayer reminds you that your biggest struggles exist inside, not outside, of you.” When you choose to privately pray with your child you are letting them know not only that you care about them but also being vulnerable with them to show them that you need God too!
Consistently be there for them. Your presence makes a tremendous difference in their life! Yes, you embarrass them sometimes. You thought the same when your Mom picked you up from school. Yes, you don’t know all their special lingo (lit, bet, flex, tea, all have new meanings). But, they need you. The National Education Association said in an article in 2014, “Students with involved parents or other caregivers earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, and show improved behavior.” http://neatoday.org/2014/11/18/the-enduring-importance-of-parental-involvement-2/
So, how will you enthusiastically love them today? When will you privately pray for them? And will you be consistently there for them? You’re not perfect. But you can do this by God’s grace.
