Do you struggle to finish a task once you started it? When you go on a date with your spouse are you consumed with thoughts of your children or job responsibilities the whole time? Are you trying to get your work project done but can’t seem to knock it out? You need to strengthen your concentration.
Concentration is important because it helps you to accomplish more, go farther, and make a bigger impact. Alexander Graham Bell said it this way,
“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand.
The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.”
Concentration is defined as the “action or power of focusing one’s attention or mental effort.” Here are a few daggers that are killing your concentration.
- divided attention
- constant motion
- lack of sleep
- not confronting issues
- annoying distractions
As you read over that list, you relate to some of those. Here are a few steps to help you concentrate
- Do the opposite – if you are struggling with concentration because of lack of sleep, take a 15 minute nap after lunch or go to bed earlier. If you can’t focus because you’re multitasking then do one task at a time and do not start another one until you’ve finished.
- Delegate – perhaps you are simply doing too much and your brain is running on overdrive. Give some of your workload to someone else. Train your child to do the dishes to help with the mess. Ask your husband to help you with the laundry so you can get to be earlier. Bottom line – ask for help when you need it.
- Determine what’s most important – every day practice developing a top 6 list. What is most important for you to accomplish today. Then from that list, find one thing that must be done today. Get that task done and win the day.
- Develop your concentration muscle – it’s going to take time. Simply reading this email isn’t going to solve your concentration problems. Be patient with yourself as you grow in your determined focus to get the job done.
